Perth has received the green light to construct what will become the world’s tallest hybrid timber building, the C6 tower. This monumental structure is set to overshadow Melbourne’s 55 Southbank Street, which currently holds the record as Australia’s tallest timber building.

The C6 tower, a hybrid engineered wood structure, will stand at an astounding 627-foot (191.2 meters). Approximately 42% of the building will be constructed from engineered timber, marking a significant step forward in sustainable construction practices.

The tower is designed by acclaimed architect Elenberg Fraser and will be located at 6 Charles Street, near the Perth Zoo. It is expected to house around 200 apartments within its groundbreaking 50-storey design.

Before the approval of the C6 project, 55 Southbank by Bates Smart in Melbourne held the title of the tallest hybrid timber building in Australia. The Melbourne landmark stands at 69.7 metres high and is renowned for its innovative use of engineered timber. Despite being eclipsed by the upcoming C6 tower, 55 Southbank Street remains a significant testament to the potential of sustainable architecture using engineered wood products.
