Dindas Australia recently completed internal prototype testing to assess the suitability of using a Paslode Impulse PPN Master positive placement nailer for BIH237x45 I-Beam Hanger installation.

The purpose of the testing was to assess whether this fixing method could provide a suitable alternative to conventional manual nail fixing for the tested BIH hanger configuration.

What was included in the test?

The prototype test assembly included Dindas LVL13.2 members used as joist and bearer components, with Dindas LVL15 used as lateral restraint members.

Why positive placement matters

Positive placement nailers are designed for installing metal connectors and hangers with pre-punched holes.

The positive placement probe helps align the nail with the hanger hole before firing. When the tool is set up and used correctly, this can help support:

  • More consistent fastener placement
  • Fewer missed holes
  • More efficient hanger installation
  • Less rework caused by incorrect nail placement
  • Better mobility compared with compressor and hose-based setups

What the prototype testing showed

The assessment was based on internal prototype testing.

During the testing program, the BIH hanger system was assessed under the required prototype testing process. Based on the completed testing, the BIH hanger system satisfied the acceptance requirements specified in AS 1720.1 for prototype testing.

This supports the suitability of the tested positive placement fixing method for the specific BIH237x45 hanger configuration assessed by Dindas Australia.

The tool evaluation also highlighted several practical considerations for teams using positive placement nailers.

Before using this type of tool, installers should consider:

  • Operator training and familiarity with the tool
  • Correct seating of the positive placement probe
  • Routine cleaning and maintenance
  • Battery and fuel cell management
  • Availability of spare consumables
  • Appropriate PPE, including eye and hearing protection
  • Confirmation that the selected fasteners match the connector manufacturer’s requirements
